Abhilash Tomy' biography , a naval pilot will set out on a six-month non-stop journey around the world .

Pull, pull! Harder, faster,” exhorts Lt Commander Abhilash Tomy as three sailors — their muscles glistening in the afternoon sun — hoist the massive sail onto the 70-foot high mast. We are onboard the Mhadei, the boat that will take Tomy on a journey around the world almost a fortnight from now. It’s a solo circumnavigation attempt — the first time an Indian will be doing it without any stops or onboard assistance. The prospects are daunting. For instance, just the task of putting up the sail this morning—which has taken three able-bodied men a lot of tugs, grunts and sweat — is what the 33-year-old Indian navy officer, a trained Dornier pilot — would be doing on his own, quite possibly in choppy waters when winds billow at speeds of upto 100 km/hr.
Does he have butterflies in his stomach? It’s a question that has been asked countless times to the Kochi lad who started sailing when he was sixteen. “Nobody believes it when I tell them I’m not having nightmares,” says Tomy with a grin that puts dimples on his tanned face. He is at the steering wheel of the Mhadei; the wind is pleasant; the sea soothing and we are doing a comfortable 5-6 knots off the placid Goa coast.
But things would be different when he
is out on the globe’s mighty oceans. His sixmonth long voyage on the 56-footer boat — that cost about Rs 4 crore to make— will take him south of all the great capes — Leeuwin, Cape Horn, Cape of Good Hope and across the Atlantic and Pacific. “I know anything can happen when you’re out on the sea. I can break the mast, lose the rudder, collide with another ship or even fall overboard,” he says. “But I’m not thinking about any of it. I’ve wanted to do this voyage for more than 11 years and now that I’m doing it, I am just very very excited and focused on preparing for it.”
A large part of the preparations involve keeping himself mentally and physically fit. “The weakest link on the boat is the sailor,” he admits candidly. “Usually, the sailor gives up before the boat does. That’s why keeping yourself well-nourished is extremely important.” Yoga and meditation are already part of his daily routine; to keep energy levels high — dieticians have recommended an average calorie intake of 3500 kcal per day for him— he’s packing in a mix of fresh food, tinned and ready to eat stuff along with rice, dal, dry fish and pickles. Also on board are two cooking gas cylinders and about 200 bottles of fresh water.
Keeping Tomy company when he sets out on the great, deep blue will be a stack of around 20 books (he’s left the choice of titles to a friend) and a satellite phone which will be his only link with the world. Will he miss not being in contact with family and friends? “I like being alone,” he says. “It may sound strange but my primary motivation for doing this voyage is not to set
a record but to savour the experience of being alone for six months. Also, thank god, I won’t be receiving any pesky calls.”
But the people he’ll probably miss the most, apart from his mom (“I had to convince her for two years to let me do this”) are his man Friday Alam who, stoic and silent, helps him out even as he steers the boat to port (“He’s the unsung hero of this voyage; I’ll miss him terribly”) and his mentor Commander Dilip Donde. Donde — who sports a bushy chalk-white beard — became the first Indian to successfully complete a solo circumnavigation (with stops) two years ago. Tomy cut his teeth on the Mhadei acting as Donde’s shore support during his circumnavigation and later graduated to sailing with him, finally donning the skipper’s hat in a journey from Rio to Capetown. He brought the Mhadei alone from Capetown to Goa, eventually clocking a total of 25,000 miles of ocean sailing on the boat in
    the past few years.
Sitting on the deck after a climb up the mast along with Tomy as part of the ongoing drill to check for repairs, Donde is aware of the challenges his protégé faces — not just on sea but also on land.
“Even as I was setting out, there were plenty of naysayers who had predicted that the chances of the boat coming back were nil,” he says. “I had a point to prove and this kept me going.”
Tomy, though, prefers to shrug off what people might think. “It may seem like an insane idea to some,” he says with an impish grin. “But to borrow a line from Catch 22 — it’s more insane on land.”

UK Teen Fabiola Mann' Biography who beats Einstein's IQ | Mensa IQ

UK Teen Fabiola Mann' Biography who beats Einstein's IQ | Mensa IQ

With a Mensa IQ score of 162, a 15-year-old London teenager with Goan roots has beaten Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking. Fabiola Mann’s IQ has put her in the top 1% of intelligent people in the world, two points over the 160 scored by the scientific greats.
Mensa, founded in 1946 as a society for intelligent people, awarded Fabiola her membership certificate in August this year. The Harrow-on-the-Hill-resident, who wants to study medicine at Cambridge University and become a
surgeon “because I like the idea of helping people”, told STOI from London that she wasn’t expecting the score.
“I had heard about Mensa and so decided to take their test,” Fabiola said in an email. Being “always interested in puzzles”, she “begged” her parents to apply for the test and paid the fee.
On July 30, the Northwood College School pupil sat down for a formal, supervised, three-hour test at the London UCL medical college. “The questions were slightly more confusing (from the practice IQ tests online) and we did not have much time to do them, so I could not really tell how I was doing,” said Fabiola.
She had to wait for a month for her scores instead of the customary two weeks as the results were lost in transit. “We went on holiday soon after (the test), and it was a month before I finally got a letter through post telling me that I had an IQ of 162 and was invited to join Mensa. I was thrilled,” said Fabiola. Amazed at my daughter’s IQ: Fabiola’s mom
Her mother Rene, a Margao native who moved to London in 1993 after marriage, said, “Obviously I had heard about Mensa and genius IQ level children, but I’m amazed that my own daughter is one.”
Dad Anthony, who was born in England and is a lecturer, informed Fabiola’s school, which in turn contacted local UK newspapers. Fabiola was interviewed by BBC in September and is also mentioned on the Mensa website. In her interview with ‘Harrow Observer’, the paper observed that “162 is the highest possible score anyone can achieve in the UK and European test”.
Asked what the Mensa membership means to Fabiola, Rene, a news producer for Associated Press Television Network, told STOI from London, “People keep asking me the same thing, and to be honest I don’t know. Hopefully it will mean an entry into the best universities and later job opportunities.”
She quickly adds, “Of course Fabiola did not do (the test) for those reasons, these are just a mother’s dreams. More than that, I hope she can go forward and realize her potential and do good in this world.”
Fabiola’s hobbies include martial arts — she has a purple belt in karate, and started taekwondo this year —chess and music. She plays the piano and guitar and according to her peers has an “amazing voice”. She also loves creative writing and is currently working on a novel. Fabiola’s Margaobased grandparents Palikaran George, 79, and Teresa, 67, are “speechless” on their granddaughter’s feat and can’t wait for her to visit in December.

Infosys new CFO Rajiv bansal's biography | Rajiv bansal will take place of V Balakrishnan

Infosys new CFO Rajiv bansal's biography | Rajiv bansal will take place of V Balakrishnan
Infosys CFO V Balakrishnan will step down from his current role at the end of this month to focus on three areas which the company said are strategic to it — the India business, the BPO business and the banking software product Finacle. He will remain on the board of the company. Balakrishnan, or Bala as he’s popularly known, will be replaced by 41-year-old Rajiv Bansal, who joined the company in 1999 as a chartered accountant.
Bala’s move set off a spate of speculation. Some said it’s the traditional way in which Infosys grooms senior executives for higher level positions. In Bala’s case, this could be the CEO’s position, which would become vacant in three years when S D Shibulal turns 60 and steps down. Bala, who has been in finance since he joined in 1991, will now be exposed more to the business operations side of Infosys. There are other examples of this in Infosys’s history. T V Mohandas Pai, who headed finance for many years, moved to head HR. Earlier this year, B G Srinivas and Ashok Vemuri interchanged their positions, the former is now the global head of financial services and
insurance and the latter is the global head of manufacturing and engineering services. It is widely believed that Bala, Srinivas or Vemuri will succeed Shibulal.
However, some others said Bala was far from happy with the change. Those at the media conference on Friday also felt a sense of disquiet. Bala did not make his usual presentation following the CEO’s address. There was a distinct pause as the event coordinator and Shibulal looked at him, apparently urging him to come forward. He did not stay back after the event, as he normally does, to interact with the media.
Shibulal categorically denied speculation that Bala was resigning. “You will continue to see Bala sitting next to me in future such events. We have always believed in giving
up positions for younger people once they are ready. Bala has been grooming Rajiv for many years, and Rajiv is now ready for the job,” he said.
The new roles that he has been given constitute very small businesses at the moment. The India business is just 1.6% of revenues, the BPO business is 4.7% and the Finacle business is about 4%. Shibulal, however, said that each of those businesses were amongst the future growth areas for the company. He noted that the BPO business is growing at about 18%, compared to the company growth of 5%. He noted that Bala would be on the board of Lodestone, the acquisition made last month that is strategic to Infosys in its consulting and Europe businesses.

India Born Monisha first woman to head F1 team | Dehradun born India Monisha biography | India Grand Prix F1 racing

From Dehradun to the Sauber factory in Hinwil (Switzerland), it has been a long but rewarding journey for India-born Monisha Kaltenborn. She has risen steadily to the top in Formula One, which is largely perceived to be a ‘man’s world’.
On Wednesday, she climbed another rung on the ladder when she became F1’s first woman team principal, replacing Peter Sauber. A team principal is the boss of all racing activity of the F1 team.
Monisha, who is also a member of FIA’s Women & Motorsport Commission, is ready for the challenge. “Naturally I’m very aware of the major responsibility I have for Peter Sauber’s racing team,” she said from Yeongam. “I have set my sights high and am committed to taking the team forward as Peter Sauber would want and leading it on to success.”.
Monisha was eight when she moved to Vienna, where her uncle worked with the International Atomic Energy Agency. Right moment to pass on the baton, says Sauber
New Delhi: Monisha Kaltenborn, who became F1 team Sauber’s team principal on Wednesday, has a strong India connection. “I spent the first eight years of my life in Dehradun, attending the Welham’s Girl School. My parents then decided to move abroad keeping an eye on countries that could provide quality education,” Monisha had told TOI earlier this year.
The 41-year-old’s influence in Sauber has been steadily growing ever since she joined the team in 1998-99 as the team’s advisor on corporate and legal affairs. In just 10 years, she rose to the position of the CEO after Sauber became an independentteam following the withdrawal of former partner BMW.
Peter Sauber, who has been part of Formula One for over two decades now, has been grooming Monisha for some time now. Monisha is now a part-owner of the Sauber team too – a third of the team’s stake came to her in March this year. With Sauber already touching 70, Monisha has effectively taken over the reins of the team.
“We decided a long time ago that Monisha would take over,” Sauber said this morning. “We left the timing open. Now is a good time for both of us, so this is the right moment to pass on the baton. After all, there have been a number of racesI’vebeen unable to attend – most recently the Japanese GP, where the team put in an excellent performance. I’m in no doubt that Monisha has all the neccesary skills to be an outstanding team principal.”
Sauber have made remarkable progress with 116 points this season and are well ahead of challengers Sahara Force India in the Constructors Championship. Both their drivers, Sergio Perez and Kamui Kobayashi, have regularly challenged and achieved podium finishes which has a lot to do with the car Sauber C-30, whose development Monisha has closely monitored.
Of course, all this has taken her awayfrom her homein Kusnacht and Monisha relies on her mother to take care of her nine-year-old son and six-year-old daughter whenever required. “There is never a free moment in F1. My mother comes down from Vienna to lend a helping hand and we have nanny at home. The children also have learned to adjust to the situation,” the India-born Austrian citizen had said.

Manda Banerji, an Indian-origin scientist finds black hole | Manda Banerji's biography , study

Billions of kilometres beyond the constellation of Virgo, a zoo of monster black holes has been discovered by a Cambridge team led by Manda Banerji, an Indian-origin scientist. Radiation, hitherto not quite taken into account, is reaching the earth as a result of earlier unidentified blackholes in what astronomers call the “early universe”.
The discovery has shaken up the scientific world because never has such a collection of monster black holes remained hidden for so long.
Scientists will now have to take a second look at many dust obscured corners of the universe while searching for hidden blackholes.
The research estimates that there are at least 400 black holes in the cluster which is 11 billion light years away. Fiercely swirling giant clouds of thick dust had surrounded the black hole zoo till Banerji’s team penetrated it with a cutting edge infrared telescope.
“These results could have a significant impact on studies of supermassive black holes,” said Banerji, lead author of the paper which has been published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
“Although these black holes have been studied for some time, the new results indicate that some of the most massive ones may have so far been hidden from our view,” Banerji added.
The zoo contains a monster black hole that has more than 10 billion times the mass of the sun, making it one of the most massive black holes ever seen. BIG DISCOVERY
Surrounding dust

black hole red
Most black holes of this kind are seen through the matter they drag in. As the neighbouring material spirals in towards the black holes, it heats up. Astronomers are able to see this radiation and observe these systems,” explained Indian-origin scientist Manda Banerji.
The significance of this discovery lies in the fact that that now scientists will have to take a second look at many dust obscured corners of the Universe searching for hidden black holes. The newly discovered monster blackhole has been dubbed ULASJ1234+0907. It is one of the reddest objects in the sky. The red colour comes from the surrounding dust which preferentially absorbs bluer light and allows only light in the red region to escape.
Massive black holes are now known to reside at the centres of all galaxies. Scientists think that they grow through violent collisions with other galaxies, which trigger the formation of stars and provides food for the black holes to devour. These violent collisions also produce dust within the galaxies. The dust is ultimately sucked in by the immense force of the black hole’s gravitational attraction.
Banerji is currently working on how galaxies and quasars evolve, using visible light as well as infra-red and submillimeter wavelengths of light. She completed her PhD on Galaxies in the Distant Universe in 2009 at University College London.
Prof Richard McMahon, co-author of the study, told the Royal Astronomy Society: “These results are particularly exciting because they show that our new infrared surveys are finding super massive blackholes that are invisible in optical surveys.”
